Helping you create a home by hand.

Introducing Prosperity Angels

Several years ago, I crocheted doilies for Christmas gifts for our daughters.  One of the vintage patterns I used was an oval with a ripe wheat pattern. Around that same time I came across an article describing the symbolism behind the ever popular pineapple motif used in crocheted items. I wasn’t able to find that article to link to for this post, but it stated that the pineapple was traditionally a symbol of warm welcome and hospitality.

My curiosity piqued, I then decided to look up the symbolism of wheat and discovered that for centuries wheat has been used to indicate bounty, abundance and prosperity. I really liked the idea of giving our daughters crocheted doilies with that symbolism worked into the design.

As I mentioned way back in this post, I also make each of our children a new Christmas ornament each year.  With the wheat pattern still on my mind, I decided to see if I could design a crocheted Angel with wheat worked into the Angel’s skirt. It took me many tries to get the body, skirt and arms of the Angel exactly like I wanted it. And then I got stuck trying to figure out how to make the wings and in the end had to make our children a different ornament that year.

But I never gave up on my design. Over the years, I would pick it up again and try different ideas for the wings and then last summer I finally had one of those “the solution is so obvious” and “why didn’t I think of this before” moments when I realized I could create wings by crocheting one head of wheat for each wing. Within hours, I had a completed Angel that I was absolutely thrilled with.

Then with the help of two friends, I was able to connect with three people who were willing to test the pattern. One tester unfortunately ended up not having time to work on the testing but I am so grateful to Julie and Sue for all their help in spotting typos and areas of the pattern where the directions needed to be clarified.

Over the winter, I crocheted more test angels from the newly corrected and revised directions until I was sure that the pattern was as clear and easy to follow as I could make it.

Now without further ado, I’d like to introduce my very first crochet pattern for sale called Prosperity Angels.

That’s interesting about the pineapples, I’ve just finished crocheting a pineapple doily.

Your angel is beautiful! Well done on the pattern! if you ever need another pattern tester for future patterns, I’d be happy to give it a go.

Congratulations on your “new arrival”! They’re gorgeous – I particularly like the simplicity of the white one 🙂 I’m at the same level of crochet-itivity as Corina is (hi, Corina!), otherwise I’d make her myself!

How beautiful! I think this is the prettiest crochet angel I’ve ever seen. The detail on her is amazing. Makes me wish I could crochet (have never made it past a couple of inches of a granny square!). I’ve pinned this lovely angel. I’m sure anyone who crochets will want to make her!
