Christmas on a Budget – Start Collecting Baskets

Christmas on a Budget – Start Collecting Baskets

Do you like to create gift baskets to give at Christmas or other occasions?

If you do, you know that the baskets themselves can be as expensive as the items you make or buy to add to them. So where to you find baskets?

The best way I know to cut down on the cost of making gift baskets is by collecting baskets year round shopping at thrift stores.

Just look at this amazing collection of baskets I found on a recent visit!

There were dozens of baskets in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Prices ranged from 99 cents up to $4.99.

Now if you’ve ever shopped at any of the big craft or houseware stores, you know that baskets can cost much more than that.

There were Christmas themed baskets.

This basket would have been perfect for putting together a coffee, tea or hot chocolate themed basket:

If you start collecting now, you’ll have lots of baskets ready to turn into gift baskets for Christmas or any occasion.

And then once you’ve got a nice collection, you can start planning what to fill the baskets with.

Food baskets are almost always well received.

One that I like to give starts with my Bean Soup in a Jar.  I’ll add a bag with the dry ingredients for Herbed Beer Bread. Then I pop in a can of beer for making the bread. And of course, I always include handwritten recipe cards for making the soup and bread.

There are so many other great ideas online for what you can fill your baskets with. The following are just a few of the posts I found featuring inexpensive basket fillers.

This is a great idea. I am writing a series on prepping for Christmas and suggested gathering boxes, but had not thought of baskets. Last year is the first time we started giving a gift basket to each of our families so this post has been most helpful.

    Thanks for sharing it.

Great idea! I never thought about giving baskets of things. I’m not a very crafty person, but I think you may convert me. ❤

I like filling gift baskets with handmade toiletries – bath oils, bath salts, hand scrubs, that kind of thing. They are easy and inexpensive to make and always go down well.

I don’t give gift baskets, but I do collect baskets to keep my knitting or sewing projects in. I also have smaller ones to keep medicines, washcloths, wrapped candies, etc. I buy them at thrift stores and have a variety of sizes for many uses.
