How to Make a Teapot Planter

How to Make a Teapot Planter

Has you favorite teapot developed a crack, making it unsafe to use?

Perhaps you have a vintage teapot sitting unused in a cupboard somewhere?

If you’re like me, you hate to throw out anything if you can find a way to re-purpose it.

When my favorite teapot developed a hairline crack inside, I decided it was time to switch teapots rather than risk a possible break with boiling hot water. It took the old cracked teapot and turned it into a Teapot Planter.

How to Make a Teapot Planter

Here’s what you’ll need:

Ivy plant in green pot, white teapot, bag of blue and green gravel and a bag of potting soil on a wood bench

Pour about a half an inch to an inch of the gravel into the bottom of the teapot. (This will allow for a bit of drainage if you happen to over water sometime.)

Fish tank gravel works perfect for this, but use whatever you may have that would allow for drainage. Even packing peanuts will work.

Layer an 1 inch or so of moistened potting soil over the gravel. Make sure to push some soil up into the spout, as well.

Loosen the plant from it’s pot and transfer it to the teapot. Add more potting soil as needed to fill in around the plant.

Add a bit of soil at a time to the spout of the teapot. You may need to use the wooden skewer to push the soil down into the spout. Continue to do this until the dirt reaches almost to the top.

Snip off a couple of sprigs of the ivy. Trim the bottom leaves and insert into the soil in the spout. They will soon take root.

The finished planter:

Wow. This is gorgeous. Mine, of course, couldn’t possibly turn out as nice, but I’ve got to try this.

Great idea, Susan! I may use this idea for my extra teapot – since I don’t have one with any cracks in it ;o)

What a great way to recycle. I hate throwing stuff out and often think, “What can I do with this?” but mostly that’s because I’m a project junkie and am always on the lookout for something creative to do.

I wanted to say thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving your honest remarks about my music. What’s funny is, I decided to axe the music after the very first comment from Lisa-Marie. She said since I enjoy listening to it, to leave it on. Well, I sheepishly admit that even *I* turn the speakers off! I thought it was just because I’m on the blog so often and I can’t write and listen to music at the same time. So I don’t even get a chance to enjoy it, really. I’m going to wait until the poll runs it’s coarse before doing so, however.

Thanks again! Please stop by my blog in the future as the music will be off in the next few days! 🙂

That is too cute. I don’t even own a teapot, but if I ever see one a yard sale I am going to get it and do the same thing!
Thanks for the sewing advice. I am leaning towards attempting to have it serviced again… different place of course!

That is just darling! And I love the touch of putting some in the spout, that makes it look “right”.

That’s really cute! That would make a great Mother’s Day gift! I think I’ll be on the look out for a teapot now.
