Small Finishes – Embroidered Bookmarks

Dave and I have been so busy this week getting the rest of the garden planted, as well as working on other yard projects, that I haven’t had much time for crafting.  But I did manage to finish two embroidered bookmarks (and another couple of small projects that I’m waiting until next week to share.)

My Mom’s birthday is coming up in June and so is Father’s Day so I stitched up these monogrammed bookmarks for them.

Mom's Embroidered Monogrammed Bookmark

My Mom isn’t one for frills and ruffles but she does love flowers.  Since she was born, raised and has lived almost all of her life in Alberta, I embroidered some Wild Alberta Roses (the provincial flower) on the top and her initial on the bottom.  The roses came from this vintage Workbasket pattern and the monogram came from this one.

For the back I used a scrap of matching pink fabric with heavy weight Pellon 808 fusible interfacing (<-affiliate link) between to give the bookmark some structure.

After it was all sewed together I blanket stitched all the way around the outside edge.   Then I crocheted a slip stitch into each blanket stitch, ending with 5 double crochet in the stitch in the middle at the bottom of the bookmark.

Dad's monogrammed embroidered bookmarkt

I kept Dad’s even simpler.  As I wrote about back in this post, my Dad loves birds, so at the top of his bookmark I embroidered one of the blue birds from this pattern.  The “L” is from the same set that I used for Mom’s but I left off the flowers.  A blanket stitch finished off his bookmark.

Now I just need to find some nice cards and then I can get them in the mail to them.

Perfect gifts for people who like to read. I’m sure your mom and dad will be so happy and will think of you each time they open their book.

I have been thinking for a while now that I need to make some bookmarks for myself and my daughter. This post reaffirms that thought. They are so pretty.

Two nice finishes, Sue. Working outside all day makes me long for the end of the day when I can sit and handstitch. I imagine you do this, too. Both are thoughtful gifts for readers, and I applaud you for being ahead of the game.

Thank you for sharing your post on the Pet Project Show today.
