So Called Milestones

Dave and I share a birthday and yesterday was our birthdays. I turned 50 and he turned 55.

Many people have asked me how I’m doing with turning 50 and I can honestly say that I’m fine with it. None of the so called milestone birthdays have bothered me.

When I turned 30, I was busy with a new baby (our youngest.) When I turned 40, I was living on Maui and busy raising teenagers (our oldest two.)

And if this past year has taught me anything it’s that there are some things that are just so far down the scale of things to worry about they shouldn’t even make the scale at all. Turning the “Big” 5 0 is one of them.

Instead we celebrated our birthdays in our own unique way.

Last night, we arrived in Panama City Beach, FL. It was a beautiful 75 degrees.

We went out for a lovely supper together that ended with our server bringing us each a chocolate covered strawberry with a birthday candle held in a swirl of whipped cream. (We had gotten to chatting with her between courses and mentioned that it was our birthdays. She surprized us at the end of our meal.)

We slept to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach and this morning, we woke up to this view:

Happy birthday to you both! I admit. Turning 50 was hard for me. Turning 52 yesterday? No biggie. =D

Turning 50 was pretty cool — I’m still the youngest in our family — HAHA!!! — and now when I don’t want to do something, I just use being 50 as an excuse, LOL!!! “I don’t have to do that – I’m 50!” Usually there’s a bit of cursing involved too, but I was keeping it clean for the censors, which is something I can do – because I’m 50, haha 😉

    Birthdays don’t bother me either.
I did know one lady who, on the day she turned 40, stayed in bed all day, so upset at now being what she considered old. Then she found out I was older than she was and she was so confused, since I played outside with the kids I babysat, walked to town, enjoyed hobbies. She thought old people didn’t have fun anymore.
