Table Topper Finished With Time to Spare

I finally have a finish to share with you. The 4th of July table topper that I showed you in progress last week is now finished and ready to use to decorate our new apartment when we move in next week.

Old Glory Table topper completed

For the center block and the red and white stripes, I stitched in the ditch. I had tried stitching in the ditch in the past and always ended up ripping it out and just doing straight line stitching 1/4″ from the seams. Since this was a fairly small project I decided this would be a good one to practice stitching in the ditch.

I confess that there was some reverse sewing and a little bit of swearing that took place during the learning process. I finally gave up trying to use the walking foot and switched to a clear foot which made it easier to see just where to sew and by the time I got done I was getting pretty good at keeping the quilting line in the ditch.

Then for the corner triangles, I did 5 rows of straight line stitching, 1/4″ apart.

The photo above shows the table topper as it’s pictured on the pattern. But when I was taking photos, I changed camera angles and I was surprised by how different it looked.

I do like this orientation better. And for some reason the white star in the center block stands out more when looked at from this angle.

Note:  The pattern is Old Glory by Creek Side Stitches.

It’s beautiful! I don’t use my walking foot for stitch in the ditch either. I’m not perfect at fmq straight lines, but I’ll get there eventually with practice. I like the second orientation better too. The star is much more obvious.

Stitch in the ditch is so not my favourite method of quilting, I think yours looks great!

I like the second orientation the best too 🙂

Good luck with move, hope it all goes smoothly.

Very nice. Great job! Stitch in the ditch takes a lot of patience. Thanks for sharing. Happy Independence Day in the U.S.A.

Suggestion – when stitching in the ditch determine on your presser foot where the needle will hit the seam and then when stitching keep your eyes on the spot on the presser foot – NOT on the needle.
I like this method better than using the stitch in the ditch foot for my Janome.
