Vintage Chore Girls Finished

When I first started stitching the Vintage Chore Girls, I had the idea that I’d turn them into a baby quilt to have on hand ready to give next time there’s a baby girl born for whom I want a special gift. But as I stitched and thought about it, I got to thinking about when I was a young mother and I realized that the only time I would have used a baby quilt with that much white in it (not to mention one that would have required special washing) was to take photos of the babies. The rest of the time, it would have been tucked away in a drawer for safe keeping.

So instead, I decided to make something that might actually get used… a wall hanging.

After all the stitching was finished, I trimmed the blocks down to 9.5” square, arranged them in two rows of four with a blank block in the lower right hand corner. I will eventually embroider the baby’s name and birth date in that block before gifting it.

The sashing and border fabric was cut to 2”; giving them a finished size of 1.5”.

To give the wall hanging a bit more body, I used a fusible fleece which was fused to the backing fabric rather than the front to make it easier to embroider through just the top layer of that blank block.

Here’s a couple of close-ups of the finished wall hanging:

I hope you’ve enjoyed this Vintage Chore Girl Stitch-a-Long.    And if anyone has been stitching along with me or does so in the future, I’d love to see photos of them.

Be sure to come back next Monday and every Monday for the next several months when I’ll be continuing to post patterns from those Workbasket Embroidery transfers that I found when we purchased the Art Deco sewing machine cabinet for my Singer 15-91.

You’ll have to be careful who you give it to, these days. Some modern mothers look at those women’s activities as sexist. I, on the other hand, LOVE your wall hanging and have downloaded every pattern. I’ve never seen this set before and I’m so glad you shared it. It’s wonderful!

Absolutely delightful! And I think much more sensible than a quilt for a baby. Anything that needs special washing in this house gets put in the “special things to be sorted later” cupboard, and is rarely seen again. Sad but true!

Love the finish product! I am hoping to do all girls this summer while on vacation. I think I will do them on tea towels — and then never let anyone touch them. All my nice ones have gravy, spaghetti or barbecue sauce stains now. There is not enough bleach in the world….

What a smart idea to make this a wall hanging. Too many special things are tucked away, but this will be perfect on the wall where it will be seen and enjoyed!
    Enjoy your week!

The wall hanging came out great and how wonderful to have something ready to go for someone special. I keep telling myself to get something made ahead of time but all those other projects get in the way!
