WIP Wednesday – Fixing the Nightgown

WIP Wednesday – Fixing the Nightgown

Hand stitching is what’s happening here today.

First a little peek of the vintage Workbasket embroidery that I’m going to be sharing this coming Monday.

Sneak peek of next week's vintage Workbasket pattern

After my early morning walk each day this week, I’ve been sitting out on the back deck and stitching until the day gets too hot.

This afternoon, I’ll be in my sewing room hand stitching the inside yoke of the nightgown I’m making.

Hand stitching the inside yoke on the nightgown

If there weren’t other unforeseen adjustments that need to be made, the nightgown would only need to be hemmed after I finished the hand stitching.   But once I had fixed the problem with the front and back yoke pieces not matching properly and got everything sewn together and pinned in place, I tried the nightgown on.   It is way too big!!

Now to be fair, I like my nightgowns to be lose and comfortable.  I had chosen to go up a size when cutting out the pattern, but honestly, the skirt/main part of the nightgown are way too full.   Instead of looking pretty and feminine, I look like I’m swimming in fabric.

I had considered unpicking the entire thing and starting over but I think if I just unpick the side seams, the fullness can be taken in that way.

That pattern is going to be getting a thorough redesign before I start cutting out another nightgown.

Depending on how those adjustments go, I may need to take a break to de-stress and do some coloring with my new set of colored pencils (<-affiliate link – they come in 100 packs!!)

Crayola colored pencils and a box of chalk

Last year, when I was working on finishing the first draft of my novel, I would often start my creative session by drawing/coloring.   I’m getting ready to start another round of editing, so when I was shopping for school supplies and saw these huge boxes of colored pencils at Staples for $5.00, I picked up a box (the chalk is for another project.)

You may wonder why I was shopping for school supplies now that all our children are grown but this time of year is a great time to stock up on paper and other writing/office supplies.

I also shop all the loss leaders… the wax crayon and composition books for 25 cents each, pencils for 20 cents a pack, coil notebooks for 5 cents, etc, etc.   I keep a few to have on hand at home but the rest gets donated to local schools.

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts on instagram of kids heading off for their first day of school already, so depending where you live you may have to hurry to take advantage of the back-to-school sales.  Here in Canada, grade school doesn’t start until after the Labour Day weekend so I still have time to do some more stocking up.

What are you working on today?

Love this series of vintage embroidery vegetable characters… looking forward to the next one on Monday. I am working on crazy quilt blocks at the moment… working my way through two of Kathy Shaw’s classes! Good luck with the night dress! Christine x

It’s a great time to buy school supplies. I am like you in liking my nightgowns one the more roomy side, but I don’t want to swim in them.

I did a lot of quilting fun this morning – got sucked into the vortex – the Scrap Vortex that is! I love your box of colored pencils. This year, money was tight, so I stayed out of the stores during no sales-tax weekend. School started last week here. I should be safe, even though I’ll miss those wonderful buys.

I didn’t even know they made coloured pencils in packages of 60!! Wow. I might just have to make a detour to Staples.

I love going to Staples, this time of the year. I am a sucker for new pens, hard cover notebooks, sketch pads. It has been awhile since I have had anyone in school.

I found myself drowning in fabric the last time I made something, even after carefully measuring and picking the right size – so I thought. Very discouraging!
