It Really is So Dog Gone Cute!

It Really is So Dog Gone Cute!

Last week for WIP Wednesday, I showed you the large So Dog Gone Cute block I’d made; modeling it after Oldest Daughter’s and her partner’s little dog, Bhodi. At the time when I posted about it, I thought the block was finished and ready to be turned into a pillow cover. But then in the comments, Mary Anne suggested that I add little white spots to the eyes to bring them to life.

I took a couple of white paper “holes” from the paper punch and placed them on the black eyes and she was sooooo right. That did really bring Bhodi to life.

Then came the task of embroidering those little white spots. It took five tries… three for one eye and two for the other… to get them the same size and looking right. Some of the attempts were downright freaky looking!

But I’m so glad I took the time and persevered to make that small addition.

So Dog Gone Cute Bhodi

Isnt’ he adorable!!

To quilt it, I stitched in the ditch all the way around the face, the eyes, and nose using white, grey and black thread in the appropriate places. Then to give the face a bit of definition, I used the edge of the walking foot as a guide to quilt with white thread down the bridge of the nose and around the mouth.

The blue background was echo quilted using matching thread.

The fabrics were all pulled from my stash in my fabric dresser. The blue was a remnant I’d bought, who knows when, just because I liked the color. The black to grey ombre that I used for the ears and eye patches, pillow back and the binding was leftover from the lining of this Zipper Binder Sewing Kit that I made for our son for Christmas one year. The white face and black for the eyes and nose were Kona Snow and Kona Black respectively.

The only thing I had to purchase was the zipper for the back of the pillow.

I did my usual concealed zipper closing.

That light grey strip on the back is where I’ll be adding a personalized hand written label/message.

Below are the photos of Bhodi that I modeled the pillow cover after.

It’s for Oldest Daughter’s partner for Christmas.  One gift checked off my list!

Goodness me, after seeing so many quilts with a neutral background I am loving the “pop” of your aqua background! Ooooh, feeling inspired to make one with a bold color background too, thanks!

So cute! The addition of those little white dots really brought this little pup to life. And I love your cushion cover. So well made and a great likeness to that super sweet Bhodi!

Oh, this turned out great. When I saw the photos of Bhodi, I saw immediately why those little white dots were so important for his eyes. It might have taken a few tries, but you nailed that twinkle. I love how Lorna’s patterns are so versatile for so many different pets.

I’m so glad you added the white dots to his eyes (even tho’ it DID drive you crazy!!). It’s going to be well-received at Christmas I know….who couldn’t love something that’s so cute?

He’s very sweet. Getting eyes right can be quite a challenge – a hairsbreadth wrong and suddenly you’re out of “sweet” and into “psychotic” – I know, I’ve done it!

Your cushion is gorgeous, Sue. I love it! I tried to comment with just “I love it!” but apparently my comment was too short and I had to go back to make it longer! How funny is that!
