Helping you create a home by hand.

My Almost Perfect Purse

Karen, over at Sew Many Ways has a post up about her quest to find the perfect wallet and purse.

The wallet she found is almost but not quite perfect.

I understand how she feels.  Lately I had been thinking it might be time to replace my old purse.   The once beautiful black leather has worn now in places to a brownish red.  Two of the leather zipper pulls are missing.  And sometimes one of the zippers doesn’t like to close.  In other words, it has seen better days.

However, when I started looking for a replacement purse, I ran into the same problems that Karen experienced in her search for the perfect wallet.

Everything in my purse has a home so that I can find an item quickly when I need it.  I need lots of pockets.  And therein lies the problem in finding a replacement because my current purse is almost perfect.  Let me show you.

The first thing you might notice is that it has three visible zippered pockets, a flap pocket on the front and another pocket between the two large zip pockets.    It also has pockets within pockets (two of which are also zip pockets) as you’ll see in a moment.  The long adjustable leather strap is great because I can either wear it on one shoulder or across my body.

Let’s take a closer look at those pockets and I’ll show you what each contains.

The flap pocket on the front holds a small sewing repair kit and a little zipper pouch for feminine care products.

The zippered pocket on the front is where I keep my keys and the padlock for a locker when I go swimming or to the gym.

My leather wallet and tea wallet (containing my favourite teas and my store discount cards) live in the first big zippered pocket.

This is an absolute must for me when deciding if a new purse will work.   Other than my keys, my wallet is the thing that I take in and out of my purse the most and I don’t want to have to go searching for it.  On the other hand, I also don’t want it to be easy for a pick pocket to get at… hence the need for a zipper.

This middle pocket has pockets within the pocket as well as one of the two hidden zippered pockets.

I’ll spare you the details, but each of the items displayed has a pocket that it lives in so that I always know where to look for it.

For instance, that thing that looks like a cheque book, it actually contains fabric samples.  Years and years ago, (I won’t tell you how many) I had my colours done.

I’m an Autumn and I use this collection of fabrics as a reference if I’m unsure if the colour of a piece of clothing I’m considering buying suits my particular skin tone.

Once again, each item that goes in the large zippered pocket in the back, has its own special place.

Even the red clown nose.  What you don’t have a red clown nose in your purse?

You really should you know.  Nothing will settle noisy, whiny children faster than putting on a clown nose.  Works for noisy, whiny adults too.  🙂

The back zippered pocket contains the second hidden zippered pocket. It provides a nice secure place to keep my passport and vaccination record when I travel.

And there you have it… my almost perfect purse.

I say almost because it’s a little too tall, making it difficult to reach down into the narrower pockets to retrieve something.  And as I mentioned earlier… it is looking a little worse for wear.

But until I can find that perfect replacement, I’ll manage just fine with almost perfect.

Note:  I considered naming this post My Practically Perfect Purse… but thought that might be  a little too much cutesy alliteration for most people’s taste.

The perfect purse…not so easy to come by! THE absolute must for me is a purse with a light colored interior, otherwise I can’t find anything ever. When I purse shop,it’s like buying a new piece of furniture. It takes me forever!

I don’t think the perfect purse actually exists, unless you make it yourself 😀

I had to quit carrying a purse many years ago due to a back injury. It always amazes me what people have in their purses! Thanks for sharing.
