WIP – A squirrel, an owl and a raccoon

In addition to working on the edits/revisions on my novel, I’ve also been working on a little quilt that just makes me smile. The fabrics are so bright and happy and the appliqué blocks are adorable.

I bought the kit from the Heritage Designs Quilting and Needlework shop at Amana Colonies in Iowa.

I did change things a bit when it came time to cut the fabric. The kit included two strips of a washed out blue fabric that I felt didn’t blend well with the other lovely bright colors, so I simply left them out when I was cutting the fabric for the log cabin blocks. Fortunately the quilt shop had provided a generous amount of fabric so I had more than enough to be able to do that.

The pattern is called One Big Cabin by Row House Creations.

Here are the blocks all laid out….

One Big Cabin baby quilt.

I may rearrange the log cabins when it comes time to sew it all together.

But before I can do that, I have to blanket stitch around the appliqués and embroidery some of the features, such as eyes and mouths. I may also add more embroidery embellishment to make this quilt my own. And when I was at Joanns the other day, I picked up a package of bright rainbow colored jumbo rick rack that I’m going to add to the quilt as well.

Even though the kit says this is a baby quilt, I intend to keep this for myself as a lap quilt for when I want to curl up in the evening and read. Who says adults can’t have fun quilts too!

Some close-ups of those cute appliqué blocks:

What an adorable quilt! I like the use of the strips in such a bold area, if I were to make one, I’d probably skip the log cabins and make each ‘row’ of just strips (that’s because I get whiney when I’m sewing log cabins 🙂 ).

Congrats on getting so much done in a hotel room – I’m sure you’re looking forward to having a space of your own soon!

This is adorable, the appliques on their own are charming, but the whole quilt is going to be amazing! 🙂

Completely adorable! And I love that you are keeping it as your own. I certainly have had a hard time giving away some of the baby/kids quilts I’ve made. I should follow your lead and make one for myself. 🙂
