In Our Garden BOM – Blocks 9 & 10

In Our Garden BOM – Blocks 9 & 10

Welcome!

I’m so glad that you’ve joined me today because….

The day has finally arrived!

Today I get to share the two blocks I’ve designed for the In Our Garden Block of the Month.

But first, I want to thank Amy, our host over at Sew Incredibly Crazy for organizing and hosting the BOM. She has put in an incredible amount of work which I know is much appreciated by each of the designers and participants.

I’d also like to thank Andover Fabrics who provided my beautiful fabric – Sun Print 2016 by Alison Glass.

I first showed you these fabrics way back at the beginning of March. They looked so beautiful against the snow!

Sun Print 2016 by Alison Glass for Andover

But now I get to show you what they look like in the blocks I’ve created.

“Garden Path” – Block 9

June’s Pieced Block

Garden Path - Block 9 of the In Our Garden BOM

When I was designing this block, I visualized 4 stone and gravel paths coming together with a fountain in the center.

The four dark grey corner blocks are Sun Print 2016 Pattern#A-8137-C. They represent the gardens (or lawn if you were to make those in green.)

The medium grey (Sun Print 2016 Pattern#A-8138-C) is the stone path while the light grey is where the path transitions to gravel (Sun Print 2016 Pattern#A8070-C2.)

The square in the very center is the fountain.

Now for those of you who are hesitant to attempt blocks with points for fear of cutting them off when sewing the blocks together… there’s no need to worry. I wanted to make this block as beginner friendly as possible so the path blocks have been designed in such a way that the points are well outside the seam allowance. I provide step-by-step instructions with lots of photos to illustrate each step.

For the more advanced quilter, I hope that you’ll find my method for constructing them an interesting take on a traditional method.

The Garden Path quilt block is available for purchase in my shop.

If you’ve been following along each month, you know that at the beginning of the BOM, I decided to make each month’s pieced block in blue and white as a blue and white quilt has been on my bucket list for quite a while now.

So here’s the blue and white version of my block:

Blue and White Garden Path - Block 9 of the In Our Garden BOM

I had even more fun designing the applique block – Block 10!

When I was first emailing back and forth with Amy about taking part in the In Our Garden BOM, I knew that I’d be able to design a pieced block but I was less certain that I’d be able to create an appliquĂ© one.

It turns out that I had the most fun creating this block!

“Coming Home” – Block 10

June’s AppliquĂ© Block

Coming Home Block 10 of the In Our Garden BOM
Poor Kitty looks like he’s floating on air, but once the blocks are sewn together using a 1/4″ seam allowance, he’ll be standing on the ground.

Here’s a list of the Sun Print 2016 Fabrics I used:

  • Tree trunk: Sun Print Pattern#A-8070-C1
  • Tree top: Pattern#A-8137-G
  • Birdhouse: Pattern#A-8070-R
  • Birdhouse roof: Pattern#A-8137-C
  • Birdhouse door and pole: Pattern#A-8138-C
  • White picket fence: Pattern#A-8138-L
  • Cat: Pattern#A-8070-O
  • Background fabric: Pattern#A8137-L

I used ThermoWeb HeatNBond Lite to fuse each appliqué piece in place.

Again in the pattern for this block, you’ll find step-by-step illustrated photos. Each appliquĂ© pattern piece is numbered in the order in which it is applied to the background fabric.

I even show you a super easy method for creating the picket fence using a template (that I provide) and ordinary parchment paper.

Click here to get the pattern for Block 10 – “Coming Home” (will be available to purchase in my shop soon.)

Each month, I’ve been making the appliquĂ© blocks that each designer has shared with fabrics from the scrap drawer of my fabric dresser.

For this block, I wanted to make another blue bird but none of the blues I had in my scrap drawer would play nice with the blues in the background fabric. I was getting super frustrated trying to find just the right bird fabric when I happened to glance out the window of my sewing room and saw that several Gold Finches were feeding at our backyard birdfeeder.

Inspiration supplied right in my own backyard!

Scrap Drawer Version of Coming Home - Block 10 of the In Our Garden BOM

As I mentioned, I had soooo much fun designing this block.

So I have an extra surprise for you!

I got thinking ahead to how I might put all the applique blocks together once the In Our Garden BOM is over. I haven’t decided on sashing yet, but I know that I’ll be adding a border. And I’m going to want corner blocks and maybe some blocks in between to break up the border.

Then I got imagining a bunch of birdhouses… all different kinds of birdhouses!

The result was this Design Your Own Home Tweet Home Corner Block pattern:

Please note: This pattern will be available soon in my shop.

We have fruit trees, berry bushes, vegetable and flower gardens. My favorite part would be the flower gardens. After my grandma passed, I was able to transplant a bunch of flowers from her house, and there are flowers that my husband transplanted from his parents’ house after his mother died. So not only are the flowers beautiful as they bloom but they also remind me of special people.

I’d say that the favorite part of my garden are the flowers we’ve planted to attract birds and butterflies. Hummingbirds have fuchsia and saliva; butterflies have milk weed and buddleia; and other species enjoy the sunflowers. Thanks for participating the BOM In the garden. I’m loving all the blocks!!

Very cute blocks. I just finished them and really enjoyed the picket fence. All of the garden blocks have been fun to complete. My quilt is going to be so cute. My garden is large and I enjoy sitting in my screened in porch and watching all the critters.

    Hi Super MOM
love all that you do and share with us here on the blogland. THANKS. I do not have a garden out in the open.I live in an apartment so have created one indoors as I live in a desert country. So my garden has a fountain, lots of non flowering plants. A stone bird bath and a bird feeder and a home for the birds which I cannot use now but in December when the weather is cool for the birds i will fill some water and put the bird home and bird feeder outside.
love your applique block the most. To see a bird outside your window and hear it sing is something I enjoy and feel a privilege to experience.
    thanks again.

It’s a gorgeous block! Thanks for sharing it with us 🙂 Generally my favourite parts of the gaden are those that have been most recently weeded – but often I get the most pleasure from watching two very tall cone shaped conifer trees which are home to lots of wee birds…they seem to spend all day coming and going and chattering and nest (and family ) building within the tree.

The favorite part of my garden is the variety of flowers. They attract hummingbirds and bees and butterflies. I have a bird feeder near the garden and I enjoy all the different birds that come to eat the variety of things I put into the feeder.

I really enjoy my rose bushes, especially at this time of year when they are loaded. We have a bonus in one rose this year–a little bird nest with 2 baby birdies. So glad we don’t have any outdoor animals to bother the birds.

Love, love the cat in your garden. Will make this block soon. I have much urban wildlife in my backyard, so I have to say that my favorite part of my garden are the fawns in the spring (right now!). They sometimes stay for awhile to play in the backyard (chasing each other).

The flower garden in the front is my favorite. It has my collection of sedum in it. The flowering crepe turtle and yupon holly trees that surround it have my bird feeders in them. Also my Bird bath is in the flower bed. This is a nice view from my sewing room window. crystalbluern at tds dot net

What beautiful applique blocks Sue. I love them all! My favorite place in our garden in our Koi pond, surrounded by beautiful trees and lots of bird houses, so we are serenaded by a variety of birds who come to feed and drink from the pond.

I absolutely love your goldfinch! Your applique blocks are wonderful, but so is your pieced block. I really like them. Knew I would. =) The birdhouses are too cute! Just a quilt of those would be fabulous. Thanks for making such an interesting and curiosity-arousing post with all those next buttons! I have to figure out how to do that. I don’t have a vegetable garden any more, too much work! But I love flowers, and if I had my way, there would be rose bushes everywhere in my yard, and gladiolas and coxcomb and coleus, too!

    June 2, 2016 1:12 am

My fantasy garden would be to have a comfortable chair under the shade of a tree, surrounded by beautiful flowers with the sound of water nearby (perhaps a steam or fountain). The weather would be perfect-not too hot nor not too cold. I would love to sit there with a good book or some stitching!
Thanks for the free patterns- they are lovely!

Really cute blocks, especially the birdhouse ones. Thanks for sharing. The favorite part of my garden is any portion that someone else plants for me because I do not have a green thumb!!

I love to watch everything come up in the spring. Sadly, the deer seem to be eating more each year.

My favorite part of our garden is anywhere we have roses. I planted them all when we moved here, and many of them have been eaten by horses or dug up by puppies, but the hardy, lucky ones that have survived are very dear to me. And I keep planting new roses, optimist that I am. My mom always had a rose garden, and while I’m a terrible vegetable gardener, I love to muck around in the rose garden; that never feels like work to me.

My garden is mostly perennials so there is lots of green while the flowers come and go. The best part of my garden is all the whirlygigs. I find that they add motion to the garden. Some are homemade and some are bought. I always try to get at least one pinwheel each year because they add color and motion without any effort from me!

Love this month’s blocks! Your directions are wonderful – so precise – thank you for that! I don’t have a garden this year, but in a previous house I planted a perennial garden that I loved! Hopefully the new owners are enjoying it as much as I did 🙂

I have a garden with flowers blooming in session. I absolutely love it. the daffodils are a handful as I go out and cut off all the dead leaves when the blooming is over. I have probably 200 daffs. anyway I love it. gardening keeps my sanity. I am enjoying each and every block and look forward to the next months blocks. thank you all for participating. great job!

We moved to our new home a year ago and I’ve been battling to even get grass to grow, which really makes me sad because I love having a nice yard. I was able to bring a few hydrangea plants with me from our previous home and two of the three are doing well. So right now I would have to say they are my favorite.
In my dream garden/yard it would have a pond with goldfish and many water plants, a field of wildflowers for the bees and butterflies and lots of purple and yellow roses.

I don’t have a garden, but if I did I would want to have lots of vegetables and herbs growing — especially tomatoes, squash, peas, and basil. And I would want it to be surrounded by gorgeous flowers that would not get eaten by the deer that have overtaken my small town neighborhood.

Thank you for all the lovely blocks. My favourite part of my garden is a beautiful Poinciana, it is a very large tree and has red flowers. Ours has only flowered once since we moved here (5years ago), I think its a bit too cold here. They love the tropics. Thanks again.

I inherited two beautiful clematis when we bought our house. I’d tried to grow them at other homes without success. One is a deep purple and the other a pale lavender. Together they put on quite a show!! Love the bird and birdhouse on your applique block.
